There are four parts to Diamond Kinetics’ overall Speed metric – Max Barrel Speed, Max Hand Speed, Forward Bat Speed and Speed Efficiency.
REAL WORLD SIMILARITY: No matter what your swing mechanics are – if you are trying to hit a home run or trying to hit a soft line drive over the shortstop – you are always expending energy.
In order to maximize your Speed Efficiency, you want to make contact with the ball when the barrel of the bat is moving its fastest (i.e. – you do not want to waste any energy during the swing by making contact before or after your barrel speed has reached its peak).
In terms of using a hammer and a nail, you would want the hammer to make contact with the nail when the hammerhead is moving its fastest. If this does not happen, then you would not drive the nail as far into the object upon which it rests because you are not maximizing your energy output.
DK TIP: Speed Efficiency is all about maximizing the energy output of your swing. If your fly balls are coming up short and landing on or near the warning track, check your speed efficiency score. You may find out out you are not making contact when the barrel of the bat is moving at its fastest and therefore, not reaching maximum energy output.
